Majestic Catalytic Converters
Inside every catalytic converter is a ceramic honeycomb coated with platinum, palladium and rhodium – three of the most valuable metals traded anywhere. A single converter can hold several grams of them.
Concentrations vary enormously by make, model and age, which is where most value is won or lost. Units bought and sold on appearance alone are routinely mispriced. Accurate recovery depends on knowing what a specific converter actually contains before it is processed – and on decanting, sampling and assaying that material properly.
Converters aren’t confined to cars. Heavy goods vehicles, buses, vans, motorcycles and construction and agricultural machinery all carry platinum- and palladium-bearing units – often larger and richer than passenger car equivalents.
